Having been determined unsafe by structural engineers, the original St. John’s Church on McDowell Street needed to be demolished. MGA was hired to design a new 9,800 SF facility on the small urban site, and was challenged to reflect the design character of the original building as well as the philosophy of the urban African-American Church. The new church was designed around a courtyard, which was the formal footprint of the original structure. Stained glass windows were salvaged and incorporated in the new building, as these were cherished works of art from previous parishioners. The building houses a new sanctuary, fellowship hall, commercial kitchen, classroom and staff offices. The project used a traditional delivery approach for architectural services, and a negotiated construction contract, and cost approximately $1,200,000.
