Swannanoa, NC
The new substation for Swannanoa Volunteer Fire Department was designed to support the functions of the existing main station on South Avenue in downtown Swannanoa. The new building is approximately 10,000 SF consisting of a training room, offices, truck bays, day room, sleeping quarters, kitchen as well as storage areas, public restrooms and training grounds. The site also includes a training facility that provides firefighters a high quality of emergency skills. The new training facility has a burn building, in which repeat real fires and scenarios can be conducted. Currently, the nearest burn building is in McDowell County, and it is not close enough for frequent use. It is also difficult to schedule training without taking resources far out of the district, according to the Swannanoa Volunteer Fire Department. The new facility will support convenient access and frequent training for the firefighters for their quality performance.
