Originally constructed in the late 1950s, this facility had long outlived its service and needed complete renovation and expansion. Our solution included gutting the entire building to the shell and infilling the existing courtyard with a new structure using clerestory windows to bring natural light into the core of the building, while at the same time creating a structure to house new mechanical systems.
Completed in 2016, the project received “Best Managed State Construction Project” award and was recognized at the 2016 State Construction Conference as such.
This project is the first detention facility in the State of North Carolina to utilize a solar hot water system and was constructed by the Inmate Construction Program (ICP) using nearly 80% of inmate labor. McGill Associates served as the MEP Engineers on this project.
